Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending the Penticton farmer's market for the first time this season. Even though Kelowna is a much bigger city than Penticton, the market in Penticton has grown into something huge and dynamic, drawing vendors and visitors from all over the province. In the last few years I have picked out my favorite booths including a rustic loaf baker, a lady who makes her own flavored balsamic vinegars, and a man with a passion for hot sauce mixed with local fruit called "Habby Jack". Of course if you go and purchase the local food, you should also travel an extra 5 minutes up the road to the Naramata bench and pick a few wineries to drop in on.
For me, Upper Bench Winery & Creamery just can't be beat. Pairing cheese with a wine is a classic combination in itself; and Upper Bench takes it one step further and makes their own cheese to pair with their wines. You can't get much better of a match than that! Of particular note is their French Gold Cheese, which has the texture of a brie and is loaded with lavender and herbs de provence. Give their tastings a go, or bring home a bottle and block of cheese for guests and wow your company with your so called ability to match a wine to a cheese. If any of you Canadian ladies are out this way this summer, drop me a line and I will set you up with some great sights and tastes!
